Finish a Modern Stripes Table Runner without Binding

Finish a Modern Stripes Table Runner without Binding

I'm so excited that you have made your very own Modern Stripes Table Runner!  (If you haven't yet, be sure to sign up for my email list and you will be sent this free pattern!)

To give this table runner an even more modern look, I really like finishing it without binding.  This pattern really lends itself well to this type of finish, and I actually think it's quicker than adding binding!

Materials needed:

  • Completed Modern Stripes Table Runner quilt top
  • Batting just slightly larger than the quilt top
  • Backing fabric
  • Clips or Pins
  • Rotary cutter or scissors
  • Iron
  • Sewing machine
  • Walking Foot (optional)

Step 1: Baste ONLY your quilt top to the batting.  Do not baste the backing to the batting.

Step 2: Quilt as desired.

Step 3: Trim the quilted top and batting to the edge of the quilt top.  Trim the backing fabric to be the exact same size as the quilted top.

Step 4: Lay the backing on top of the quilted top right sides together.

Step 5: Clip or pin the backing to the quilted top.

Step 6: Using your walking food on your sewing machine if you have one, sew a 1/4 inch seam around the edge.  Be sure to leave about a 5 inch opening.  Back stitch at the beginning and the end.

Step 7: Cut the corners of the inside of the quilt.  Be sure to get close to the stitching, but do not cut through the stitches.

Step 8: Flip the quilt so that the batting is now on the inside.  Press.

Step 9: Fold the opening pieces under so that they match the rest of the quilt edge.  Press.  Clip the opening closed.

Step 10: Sew one seam around the edge as closely to the edge as possible.  Backstitch at the beginning and the end.
